Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+) in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow ST3+

Job overview

We welcome applications for this role in our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) department.

The successful applicant will be working as part of a team providing same day assessment and diagnostics to promote admission avoidance and/or a reduction in length of stay for our patients.

Our SDEC department has three areas of focus:

  1. Acute Medical clinics for review and follow up of discharged patients, and for direct GP referrals. There are two clinics running in parallel each weekday, which will be undertaken by a combination of an Advanced Care Practitioner, Resident Doctor or Physician’s Assistant.
  2. Acute Assessment pathways to review and assess patients and conditions that cannot be postponed and may require urgent review on the day.
  3. Intravenous infusion pathway for provision of IV antibiotics on an outpatient basis and other infusions such as diuretics, iron or blood transfusions.

We work closely with both the Emergency Department and General Internal Medicine on call teams to provide a comprehensive front door assessment service.

We are a strong, cohesive team of doctors, nurses, multi-disciplinary team members and non-clinical support staff. We pride ourselves on giving excellent clinical care combined with outstanding performance.

We are working to develop further innovative pathways to improve patient care.

Main duties of the job

The post provides excellent experience in the acute assessment and management of a wide case mix of acute general medical admissions, with opportunities to acquire skills in procedures.

The successful candidate will be based in Medical SDEC 9am-5pm.

The post-holder will be supervised by the Acute Medicine Consultant covering SDEC and will work closely with the on-call medical team.

The post-holder may be requested to perform exceptional irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for the continuity of care and in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
