Client Portfolio Manager

CBM’s wealth management subsidiary – May Barnhard Investments (MBI) is seeking a dedicated Client Portfolio Manager with 5-7 years of experience in investment analysis and trading, and proven expertise in managing client relationships.

MBI manages over $320 MM in individual and institutional client assets. The Portfolio Manager will manage a subset of these portfolios and will be responsible for the performance of the underlying assets, analyzing risk metrics and executing all trades and strategic initiatives within the portfolios. The ideal candidate will be quantitatively strong, with excellent written communication, research and interpersonal skills.

Remote work is available, with occasional in-person attendance required for client and team meetings.

Essential Functions

  • Portfolio Management: Manage a subset of MBI client portfolios by developing and executing investment strategies that align with each client’s investment policy statement (IPS).
  • Meetings Preparation & Participation: Support the preparation of semi-annual meetings related to portfolio management and participate in these meetings, as well as other client meetings upon request, to present reports, provide market updates, and discuss portfolio performance with clients.
  • Client Engagement: address client questions promptly and collaborate with the team to ensure seamless and coordinated responses.
  • Investment Strategy Development & Monitoring: Regularly review and address the approved investment listings, recommending updates as necessary. Develop and maintain model portfolios for clients, ensuring they align with the approved investment listings and meet client objectives. Perform other investment analysis as needed.
  • Facilitate Investment Trades: Execute trades to implement investment and tax strategies, rebalance portfolios, and manage cash levels to align with client objectives and optimize tax efficiency.
  • Retirement Distribution Withholdings: coordinate with the financial planning and tax teams to determine and implement appropriate withholding strategies for retirement distributions as needed.
  • Client Distributions & Transfer Coordination: Manage and oversee various other client distributions requests, including Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), donor-Advised Fund (DAF) donations, monthly distributions, and account transfers. Collaborate with the Operations team to ensure timely and accurate processing, while supervising the execution of these transactions.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Regularly update and refine expectations for various asset classes, incorporating current economic conditions, market trends and geopolitical factors. Keep informed about the latest market trends and developments in the investment sector.
  • CIO Support: assist Chief Investment Officer (CIO) in various tasks, including research, data analysis, and preparation of investment reports, to support strategic decision-making.
  • Marketing Material Creation & Presentations: Develop detailed financial materials for firm marketing purposes and serve as a presenter for MBI Market Updates.
  • Business Development: Create proposal materials and engage in prospective client meetings.
  • Investment Committee Meetings: Prepare agenda and materials for monthly meetings and participate in these meetings.
  • Team Collaboration: Regularly inform Financial Planners and Relationship Managers about updates in investment performance, model portfolio adjustments and capital market expectations through periodic communications and visual aids. Support the planners and Operations team with ad hoc requests and participate in team meetings.

Job Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience within the investment management industry, including direct investing experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Finance, Economics, Accounting, etc.)
  • MBA, CFA designation or progress towards either
  • Experience with Charles Schwab trading platform or similar custodial platforms (preferred not required)
  • Experience with investment software and websites such as Morningstar, Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, etc. (preferred not required)
  • Experience with financial models, securities analysis and valuation techniques
  • Advanced finance, accounting, and Excel modeling skills
  • Effective client support and relationship management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated and highly analytical
  • Flexibility and desire to work in a team environment
