Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the Occupational Safety and Health Section of the Division of Health Care Management and Occupational Safety and Health. The incumbent reports to the Medical Officer and Team Lead, Medical Entitlements.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Medical Officer will be responsible for the following duties: Clinical Duties: • Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties, review long-term sick leave, develops and implements return-to-work (RTW) plans for staff members after long term sick leave. • Undertake day-to-day occupational health duties: related to review of medical documents, certification, or rejection of sick leave requests, calls with staff members and HR partners, prepare recommendation for UN staff return to work and advise on termination for reasons of health.. • Refers staff to outside specialists as necessary. • Follows-up with outside specialists. • Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues. Medico Administrative Duties: • Liaises with UN Medical Units, HR Partners, staff members, and host-nation medical facilities as required by the management of medical entitlements. • Follows the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations. • Participates in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission. • Deputizes for a more senior Medical Officer during his/her absence. Supervisory Administration: • Manages day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment. • Ensures appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities, e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). General: • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required.

Formal training in CPR and, preferably in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS and ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care. Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in Medicine (MD, Dr. MuD, Dr. Med, DO, or equivalent) is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Medicine (MBBS, BMBS, MBChB, MBBch or equivalent) with three additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job – Specific Qualification
Current unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of one of the Members States of the United Nations is required. A residency/internship in one of the medical specialties, preferably internal medicine, emergency medicine, or occupational medicine is required. Formal training in CPR and, preferably in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS and ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care is required.
Work Experience
Knowledge of clinical, occupational and tropical/travel medicine is required. At least five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine is required. Two years or more years of experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required and fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. This post is financed by the Extra-budgetary Account. The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General, who may assign them to any of the activities or offices of the United Nations in accordance with staff regulation 1.2 (c). Further, staff members in the Professional and higher category up to and including the D-2 level and the Field Service category are normally required to move periodically to discharge functions in different duty stations under conditions established in ST/AI/2023/3 on Mobility, as may be amended or revised.
