The Financial Specialist at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is an integral member of the HCI Finance team. Reporting to the Associate Director of Accounting & Finance, the position will serve as the finance liaison for assigned departments (labs, research groups, and others). In this capacity, the Financial Specialist will play an important role in financial stewardship and oversight of the assigned departments throughout the fiscal year and the annual budgeting process. The Financial Specialist will also serve as the primary departmental contact for requests from HCI Investigators to process non-personnel corrective journal entries and assist with accounting related questions.

Other duties of the position will include closing purchase orders as requested, tracking Evidence of Review completion, preparing monthly Overspent Reports, serving as the primary departmental Scholarship Admin Coordinator, and managing activity setup and close requests as requested by Finance team members. The Financial Specialist will be cross-trained and serve as a backup for other HCI Finance team members for duties such as non-personnel cost transfers, wire transfer payments, occasional payment request submissions in the ePR system, and maintenance of recruitment commitment tracking schedules.

Responsibilities

1. Perform budget preparation/review for assigned areas of HCI.

2. Perform financial analysis, reconciliations, and other financial and accounting tasks for assigned areas of HCI.

3. Conduct periodic meetings with each assigned Responsible Person/Account Executive to review comprehensive funding status and individual chartfields.

4. Process non-personnel corrective journal entries and assist with other accounting related questions.

5. Prepare Evidence of Review tracking report and work with each Responsible Person/Account Executive to ensure compliance with university policy.

6. Maintain internal control procedures, and financial guidelines and policies including coordination with Finance staff and other stakeholders.

7. Recommends and implements improvements that affect accounting systems and departmental operations.

8. Serve as primary backup to other Finance staff for a variety of financial processes (cost transfer/wire transfer/payment requests/etc.)

The Financial Specialist has the authority to independently determine the type and nature of analysis to be used to obtain the desired information or results, including data to be collected, analysis methods, presentation, format and report structure.

Representative challenges of this position include organizing and prioritizing multiple projects, determining the best course of action or appropriate resources needed to complete a project or address a problem, obtaining valid data and creating clear and understandable reports that reflect the data being sought.

The Financial Specialist must correctly interpret regulations to ensure the University is in compliance with Federal, State and other requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Healthcare Administration, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); plus two years of related experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices; spreadsheet and database skills; knowledge of statistics and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relation and effective communication skills required.

An advanced degree, such as a Master’s of Business Administration, is preferred. Certain positions may require familiarity with hospital billing systems, Medicare and insurance reimbursement regulations, etc.
