Internships

 

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

 

The purpose of the programme is:

 

  • To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
  • To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
  • The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

 

Organizational Setting 

 

The Director General’s Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States’ needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.

 

 

 

 

Main Purpose

 

The Liaison Office in New York is part of the Director General’s Office (DGO). It serves as a liaison between the Secretariats of the United Nations and the Agency in the implementation of the Agreement Governing the Relationship between the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (INFCIRC/11). It also liaises with representatives of Permanent Missions of Member States to the United Nations, specialized agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and the news media.

 

To assist the Liaison Office in New York on non-confidential issues related to implementation of the relationship agreement between the United Nations and the Agency, in particular concerning reporting on resolutions, decisions, and relevant documentation of both entities.

 

 

 

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Under the supervision of the Director IAEA Liaison Office NY, attend, represent, take notes, and report on meetings of the Plenary, Main Committees, and Subsidiary bodies of the United Nations General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, Security Council, and other relevant events for the IAEA at UNHQ-New York, as requested;

 

  • Assist in preparations for the Agency’s participation in United Nations-related meetings;

 

 

  • Under the guidance of the Office’s senior management, interact with delegations of the Permanent Missions to the United Nations and – representatives of other intergovernmental organizations with offices in New York;

 

 

  • Assisting visitors from IAEA headquarters on duty travel;

 

 

  • Assist with the preparation of and research for outreach presentations for the public;

 

 

  • Take on other tasks to support the general work of the Office, as needed.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • University degree in international relations, international security or relevant discipline.

 

  • General knowledge of United Nations System.

 

 

  • General knowledge of nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful uses is an asset.

 

 

  • Excellent written and spoken English is essential, and fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian) is an asset.

 

 

 

 

Applicant Eligibility

 

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.

 

  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.

 

 

  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA’s internship programme.

 

 

  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.

 

 

  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.

 

 

  • Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only.
