Job Summary
The Research Department of the International Monetary Fund is seeking an Economist/Senior Economist specializing in climate policies.
Under the Structural and Climate Policies Division of the Research Department, the selected candidate will be involved in enhancing the Department’s work on climate change and mitigation strategies. The candidate will participate in developing and executing the research agenda of the department in these areas, integrating research results into the multilateral surveillance products of the IMF, and contributing to the IMF’s efforts to enhance the bilateral surveillance of climate issues within the context of Article IVs.
The selected candidate must bring a strong background in climate or environmental economics, leveraging both analytical rigor and operational experience. At the same time, a solid foundation in macroeconomics—with a particular emphasis on structural issues such as long-term growth, industrial policies and inequality—is essential. Prior experience in other international financial institutions, especially in conducting climate-related analytical work and contributing to operational engagements, would be considered a strong asset.
Minimum Qualifications
Educational development, including and/or supplemented by work experience, typically acquired through the completion of:
An advanced degree in macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial economics, public finance, international trade, econometrics and/or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience is required; OR
A PhD in macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial economics, public finance, international trade, econometrics and/or a related field is required.
The ideal candidate must have a proven ability to conduct high-quality research on climate policy. They should possess excellent analytical and technical skills, demonstrate strong writing abilities with the capacity for producing timely results, excel in effective communication with diverse audiences, and exhibit significant leadership qualities or potential.

Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and policy reports.
Experience working in other multilateral institutions.
Proven ability to design and implement empirical studies and collaboration with scientists on environmental issues.
Deep understanding of climate risks and mitigation strategies in a variety of contexts, including developing and fragile countries.
This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund’s new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.
A regular staff member who is selected to fill the vacancy will maintain their open-ended status. If the selected candidate is a contractual employee, they will be offered a Term staff appointment. Staff members already on a term appointment will continue their current term but may receive an extension provided that their current term appointment has not already been extended.
