The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state’s natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth’s marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Description:

Environmental Justice – DFG Intern

The Environmental Justice Intern at the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will work under the supervision of the agency’s Environmental Justice Liaison to conduct programmatic research on youth workforce development initiatives relevant to establishing an Environmental Justice Community Ambassadors program at DFG. This will include preparing and conducting interviews of existing relevant workforce development, skill-building and educational programming, including representatives of community colleges and universities located within or disproportionately serving EJ communities, municipal partners, partner agencies within the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, and commercial entities operating in service and support of workforce development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build a collection of programmatic examples of job shadowing within technical, government, management, communications, and public engagement settings.
  • At the direction of the DFG EJ Liaison, prepare outreach lists of relevant program providers, vendors and educators operating in the areas of training and workforce development in the environmental sciences, stewardship of natural resources and recreational infrastructure, marine fisheries, ecological restoration and wildlife management.
  • Work with DFG’s Environmental Justice Liaison to develop a questionnaire for interviews
  • Collaborate with the Department of Fish and Game’s Environmental Justice Liaison to conduct interviews
  • Work with the DFG Environmental Justice Liaison to prepare draft proposal materials supporting the establishment of a DFG Environmental Justice Ambassador program.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • A constructive interest in policy and program development combined with an aptitude for researching current and historical resources and information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly through writing, verbally and using other appropriate tools.
  • General familiarity with, knowledge of, and/or coursework in, the environmental sciences and stewardship, recreation and outdoor activities, including hunting and shooting sports, public service communications, government, community development, workforce development, and public outreach, as well as related subject-matter.

The position is scheduled for June 2-August 15,2025 at approximately 30 hours/week.
