Overview
Incumbents in the Landscaper series install, repair, and maintain the landscaping and grounds on the USU Eastern campus, including snow removal.
Responsibilities
The Landscaper II reports to a Landscaper Lead. This classification may train and guide student and/or hourly employees.
Typical Functions:
- Plants and maintains trees, shrubs, flower beds, etc..
- Applies pesticides to rid grounds of pests, such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks, and others.
- Applies fertilizers.
- Prunes trees, trims shrubs, and pulls weeds.
- Rakes and mulches the grounds as needed.
- Mows and trims lawns.
- Removes snow from sidewalks and doorways.
- Repairs and maintains campus irrigation system.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs on grounds equipment.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of experience or an associate degree/technical training in a related field is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Skilled in performing routine manual labor.
- Ability to operate landscape maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of plant materials and their cultural requirements.
- Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening.
- Skilled in operating snow removal equipment.
- Ability to diagnose plant conditions and cultural needs and recommend treatment options.
- Knowledge of irrigation equipment and methods.
- Knowledge of soil types, slope, and drainage.
- Ability to communicate with co-workers and customers.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Skilled at organizing resources and establishing priorities.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).
Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
