Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated individual to support the work of the Insurance & Unemployment Fraud Division (IUFD) within the Criminal Bureau. 

The Insurance & Unemployment Fraud Division investigates and prosecutes complex insurance and unemployment fraud cases, including violations of M.G.L. c. 152, M.G.L. c. 151A, and M.G.L. c. 175H, and other illegal activity, such as larceny, conspiracy, and money laundering. The Division is staffed by a group of experienced prosecutors and financial investigators who partner with Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Attorney General’s Office, and local, state, and federal investigative and enforcement agencies. 

Primary Duties: A Paralegal assigned to the Insurance & Unemployment Fraud Division provides day-to-day paralegal and administrative support to the Division’s staff in all phases of investigation and litigation of cases. The duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Assisting in preparation of exhibits, PowerPoint presentations, and summary charts for grand jury presentations, court hearings, and trials;
  • Supporting litigation matters by drafting court pleadings for filing and assembling, reviewing, and producing discovery, including notices of discovery;
  • Providing support and assistance to the attorneys and/or investigators in preparation for hearings, meetings, or trial;
  • Organizing and maintaining physical and electronic case files;
  • Effectively communicating with attorneys and witnesses, as well as court clerk’s offices and members of the public;
  • Managing calendars (including the scheduling of critical dates, case-related meetings, and deadlines);
  • Researching policy and legal matters pertinent to IUFD’s work and initiatives;
  • Compiling the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) and the Division of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) Quarterly reports;
  • Preparing annual reports reflecting IUFD case outcomes;
  • Assisting in the coordination of trainings and assembly of training materials;
  • Assisting with special projects; and
  • Performing additional duties, as necessary, to effectuate the above responsibilities.

The Paralegal will work closely with prosecutors, victim witness advocates, investigators, and administrative support personnel within the Criminal Bureau, as well as with federal, state, and law enforcement partners. 

Location: The Paralegal hired for this position will work out of the AGO’s Boston Office. Our hybrid model may include some remote workdays for the successful applicant. For the first six months of the position, the Paralegal will be expected to work in the office at least three or four days per week.

Qualifications

Position Requirements: The successful applicant will be a highly motivated worker who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment on a range of complex matters, often under time pressure. A bachelor’s or associate degree or an equivalent combination of related education and/or experience is required. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and possess the ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making. Attention to detail, proficient verbal and written communication skills, and a high level of professionalism are necessary. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. A candidate with a working knowledge of Westlaw and/or LexisNexis, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft SharePoint are preferred. Applicants with prior criminal and/or civil litigation and e-discovery experience are also preferred, along with a high level of proficiency with technology and computers. 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to working for the public interest, a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is also preferred, as travel may be required to various courts and offices throughout the Commonwealth.
