Radiologic Technologist – Diagnostic Radiology – Day/Evening

PRN (On Call As Needed)

Shift: Days with occasional evening and weekends. No night shifts.

Position Function: Under the direction of the Diagnostic Supervisor, uses stationary or portable imaging modalities in providing patient imaging services. Insures patient positioning and preparation of facilities, equipment and supplies for patient services. Transfers patients between wheelchairs, stretchers, exam tables and patient units. Duties include bone densitometry, as well as all general radiographic procedures. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Maintains minimal continuing education credits as required by ARRT and ISCD; proactively renews certifications/renewals before the due date without reminders from supervisor.

2. Responds appropriately to emergency situations.

3. Routinely demonstrates competency and adherence to all organizational safety directives and P&Ps including, but not limited to: Fire, “Right to Know” (MSDS), Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control, Life Safety (Utilities), and department specific safety procedures as evidenced in daily performance of job functions and successful response to drills and incidents.

4. Contributes/participates in quality improvement activities throughout the year.

5. Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.

6. States four intervention strategies based on age/population specific criteria exams; sensorimotor, cognitive, and psychosocial development.

7. Daily inspects Emergency Response Kits for red seal integrity and assures supplies are maintained with the kit; notifies Supervisor when red seal is broken.

8. Accurately enters, updated, and edits ITS clinical/ demographic/technical information; utilizes EMR inquiry functions correctly.

9. Able to demonstrate proper sterile technique.

10. Able to demonstrate proper technique for catheters/guidewire exchanges, stitch removal, and power injector operation.

11. Wears ID badge at chest level at all times; wears radiation badge outside lead apron.

12. Employee attends 75% of departmental and staff meetings.

13. Annually demonstrates venipuncture competency and follows departmental policy routinely.

14. Ensures that supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized and efficient manner.

15. Verifies correct patient by checking wristband with the name on requisition and verbally identifying patient.

16. Verifies correct procedure by checking; physician’s orders in patients’ chart; contacts nursing floor with any discrepancy.

17. Questions all females within childbearing age about pregnancy using the standardized history sheet, with signature of patient and technologist.

18. Obtains patient history using standardized form, as indicated.

19. Explains procedures and educates the patient to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation.

20. Transports, transfers, and positions patient during the examination process; adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified areas of the body; routinely insures that safety devices and restraints are used appropriately.

21. Performs all studies with markers according to established protocol or sequence.

22. Moves x-ray equipment into specified position and adjusts controls to set exposure factors such as time and distance, based on knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols.

23. Operates portable and stationary Radiologic/fluoroscopic equipment to produce radiographs of body for diagnostic purposes.

24. Practices radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding skills, and knowledge of applicable exposure factors to minimize radiation to patient and staff.

25. Follows up procedures by checking Synapse for correct image and document transfer from modality.

26. Transports patients to appropriate locations post-procedure.

27. Maintains equipment and performs daily warm-up to the equipment.

28. Maintains clean environment by cleaning assigned room daily and sanitizing surfaces between each patient.

29. Demonstrates competency in operating bone density measurement (Dexa) and analysis equipment to produce accurate clinical data.

30. Routinely demonstrates accountability to the organization’s ALARA, Core Values, Confidentiality, Customer Service, HIPAA, Infection Control, Patient Safety, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Federal rules in all interactions or assignments.

31. Organizes and maintains patient supplies, ensures that items are available for patient care; keeps medications secure and/or under surveillance at all times.

32. Seeks knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences to stay productive in current positions.

33. Completes assignments before end of shift, communicates outstanding issues to next shift for follow up.

34. Completes ERFs/injury reports accurately and within 24 hours.

35. Completes ARRT, ISCD, and any other registry necessary to complete duties, without needing reminded by supervisors.

36. Notifies Supervisor when working stock of supplies is getting low.

37. Willingly shares knowledge and experience with students and shadowing visitors.

38. Creates a positive experience for patients, families, and co-workers by using customer service skills in daily work routine.

39. Performs other related duties or tasks as directed or assigned. 

Qualifications and Standards

Education: Graduate of an AMA-approved school of Radiologic Technology. 

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. One year current experience as a staff technologist preferred. 

Certifications/Licensure: Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required. Recent X Ray Technologist graduates must achieve registered status in 12 months. (DEXA scanner users must achieve registry within 12 months of assignment in DEXA by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry or equivalent). Current CPR/AED certification required. Clinical Instructor Certification preferred.
