Minimum Qualifications:

High school or equivalent. At least two years’ experience as a full-time commissioned police officer. Must possess an Intermediate Certificate issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license – not subject to suspension.

The University of Texas Medical Branch Police Department strives to provide protection and service in a

courteous manner to the faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors of UTMB in conformance with the Regents rules and

Regulations, UTMB policies, or federal, state, or local laws and ordinances. The Department also implements programs

that are aimed at preserving the assets of UTMB.

Job Summary:

To provide service, information, and aid to all citizens as circumstances require; prevent crime, suppress disturbance, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders.

Specific Job-Related Duties:

  • Serves as the Campus Security Authority.

  • Perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas Medical Branch.

  • Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law to prevent or suppress crime.

  • Provide service, information, and directions to students, employees, and visitors.

  • Prepare reports on all activities, filing them with the supervising officer.

  • Execute all lawful process.

  • Arrest offenders with and without a warrant when authorized by law.

  • Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property.

  • Attempt to locate missing persons.

  • Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contact, placing violators in custody, or using citations or warnings.

  • Investigate motor vehicle collisions.

  • Identify potential security and safety hazards.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency in all phases of duties performed.

  • Must demonstrate logical, effective problem solving ability.

  • Must be able to provide creditable testimony in court of law.

Salary Range:

Starting Pay for Sr. Police Officer: $62,715

Police Career Ladder:

Sr. Police Officer: $62,715 (< 4 years Police Officer experience and an Intermediate License)

Sr. Police Officer: $76,452 (≥ 4 years of experience)

Sr. Police Officer: $81,895 (≥ 8 years of experience)

Sr. Police Officer: $85,513 (≥ 12 years of experience)

Sr. Police Officer: $89,464 (≥16 years of experience)

Sr. Police Officer: $93,414 (≥ 20 years of experience)

TCOLE Certification Incentive Pay up to $1,620 annually.

College Education Incentive Pay up to $1,140 annually.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or at least 30 college credit hours.

Wor k Schedule:

Police Officers must be willing to work assigned shifts, which may include dayshift, or overnight midnight shifts.

Police Officers must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions, which may include summer heat, winter cold, rain, and or hurricane situations.

Equipment:

Must be proficient in the operation and safety procedures of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned tasks.

Physical Capabilities:

Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. Good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs.

Other:

Must hold a Peace Officer Commission, issued by The University of Texas System, and a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension. Must be eligible to drive a university owned or leased motor vehicle. Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Office of the Director of Police, the Board of Regents, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement concerning age requirements and physical, mental, and educational standards. Effective written and oral communications skills. Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of The University of Texas System Police. Knowledge and skills in emergency medical procedures, first aid and CPR techniques.
