Summer 2024 Remote Communications & Development Intern

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK

The Summer 2024 Communications & Development Intern will offer vital assistance to the Development Team at the IRC in Louisville in engaging volunteers, community partners, donors, and other stakeholders; scheduling communications; written and graphic content creation; and other assigned business development projects. The intern plays a pivotal part in involving the community and producing materials to back the IRC’s work in significant ways. Please note that this is an UNPAID remote internship*.***

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and support social media outreach, community engagement and informational materials, and donor/sponsorship research.
  • Follow and enhance the strategic outreach plan and content to engage new community partners, university contacts, and other community groups supporting IRC.
  • Manage IRC Louisville webpage and social media to ensure information is current and regularly updated.
  • Aid in content collection and storytelling projects for web and social media platforms.
  • Support development efforts through grant research, outreach for in-kind donations (non-monetary), and processing incoming volunteer/intern applicants.
  • Provide administrative support to the Development Team by assisting with grant data collection and entry, producing donor acknowledgments, and other cultivation activities.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Development Team and monthly all-staff meetings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Intern will gain experience implementing a nonprofit communications plan and creating content for fundraising appeals, donor-facing reports, newsletters and social media.
  • Intern will gain insight into nonprofit grant processes and reporting requirements for a nonprofit organization.
  • Intern will learn about strategic planning for fundraising and communications.
  • Intern will learn about administrative processes in the nonprofit space.
  • Intern will learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how capturing this data improves services.

TRAINING & GUIDANCE

  • In-depth training will be provided for interns to understand IRC programming and the various needs of clients accessing IRC services. Interns with client languages who could serve as an interpreter will receive guidance on policies when interpreting. Other activity specific training will be provided as needed. Flexibility, initiative, and a desire to collaborate are essential qualities for this intern opportunity. A high-level of confidentiality is required when working with IRC clients.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a current undergraduate student, graduate student, or less than 12 months past graduation.
  • Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or must have active and compliant visas and work authorization status in the United States (the IRC must not be represented as a sponsor or host in any application, filing, or other context for an intern).
  • Usage of a personal computer and internet access for remote work purposes.
  • Ability to handle sensitive client information confidentially.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills, including demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and across language barriers.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Previous experience working with vulnerable populations preferred, but not required.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office products and willingness to learn to use new software for task completion.
  • Adherence to IRC volunteer/intern and workplace policies.
  • Preference given to applicants able to make multi-term commitment.
