Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is located in the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and persons marginalised from society and development. The intern will work under the supervision of and report to the Associate Social Affairs Officer in the Programme on Disability Section (PDS) of the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch (SIPB). The intern will contribute to research and the organisation of meetings and events on the topic of disability, the human rights and inclusive development of persons with disabilities in line with the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as other topics relating to preparations for the annual Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the CRPD. The intern will contribute to research and the organisation of meetings and events on the topic of disability, the human rights and inclusive development of persons with disabilities in line with the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as other topics relating to preparations for the annual Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the CRPD. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: • Assisting with desk-based research, including legal research, in relation to the SG Report on the implementation of General Assembly Resolution 78/195 of 22 December 2023 entitled “Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol thereto: situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies”. • Assisting with the organisation of an Experts Group Meeting to be held in March or April 2025, in connection with the SG Report mentioned above. • Assisting with the organisation of and providing support for the planning and operation of the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the CRPD (10 – 12 June 2025) and relevant activities before, during and after the session. • Conducting research in the areas of interest to the Section. • Assisting with preparation of materials to be posted on the website and social media platforms. This internship is designed to be full-time. Duties will be carried out in a hybrid manner (a combination of in-person presence and telecommuting from within the duty station at the UN Headquarters in New York). The internship will begin with an expected duration of 5-6 months.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
